You're absolutely right! One of the best arcade games of the 1990s, and up there with Contra and Gunstar Heroes as one of the greatest run and guns there is!
If you want to try something interesting, try GunForce and GunForce II (both are available for MAME), Nazca's earlier run and gun games before Metal Slug when the team was still at Irem. They're quite fun, but not as polished.
Another game they made around that time is In the Hunt, a submarine shmup that looks just like Metal Slug, but has a different style and pace.
Just love the background art and such, like everything is individually drawn. Guessing that took advantage of the Neo Geo's comparatively advanced hardware for the time.
The original Shinobi is still a fun pick-up-and-play game for me, even if I very rarely make it past level two hahaha
